My Approach
Here are some of my current guiding principles:
01
Kindness
Kindness is key. What matters is how we treat each other.
02
Connection
Spirituality isn't about perfect beliefs; it's about deep connection — to ourselves, to each other, and to the earth.
03
Curiosity
Faith is being comfortable with the unknown, staying curious, and not being forced to believe what you're told.
04
Sacred Balance
Sacred balance is important, not salvation. You don't need to be saved from a world that's already sacred. You just need to find your place in it.
Questioning What I Was Taught
As a consumer lawyer, I’ve spent 40+ years working with fundamental principles of truth - what’s believable, what’s evidence-based, what’s the source, and what holds up under scrutiny. When I applied those same standards to Catholic dogma, which I had been told to trust since childhood, it collapsed like a house of cards.
You may have heard that expression which goes something like this:
“Those who love sausage should never see how it’s made.”
After many years of studying Catholic history, doctrine, and the institution from the inside, I realized this is also true of Catholicism.
The Catholic institution - built by men for men, hundreds of years after Jesus - has little to do with the Jewish rabbi who preached about welcoming strangers, feeding the poor, and loving your enemies. It has much more to do with power, control, and keeping you afraid. None of this is a judgment of the people who stay - it's just not where I found my truth anymore.
When I work in non-religious spiritual direction, I don't give you new dogma or tell you what to believe. My role is to help you hear your own truth - the one that got buried under all that Catholic dogma, fear and guilt.
